USARP TOTE BAG (LIGHT OLIVE/OD GREEN)

Sale price¥25,280

Some vintage items are lesser known, others are well known. USARP stands for United States Antarctic Research Program ( USARP ), a joint military-civilian research program launched in 1959 .

These bags appear to have been issued to the private sector and were made by Diamond Brand, who I believe also made the Yucca Pack for the Boy Scouts of America in the 1930s .

I chose Alberton's 18oz Basic Duck fabric because I loved the color and it's very similar to the original bag.

The handles and side pulls are made from heavy cotton webbing. The leather reinforcements, nameplate, and brass D- rings are made in Japan by Kamishirai Shi Brass in Tokyo. The special sand-cast brass D- rings add a nice weight, give the bag a special detail, and will age beautifully over time. All made in Japan.
